Nelumbo nucifera , more
commonly known as Lotus, is an aquatic plant which measures about 50 cm.
in diameter (similar to the Vitoria-Regia). It produces only one rose or
white colored flower with rosy borders, inside which there is the fruit
and seeds. It is a native of southeastern Asia (Japan, Philippines, and
India principally) where it is treated with respect and frequently
associated with Buda, as it represents purity, emerging from immaculate
muddy waters. In Japan, for example, this flower is also admired when
Springs comes, and people go to see the blossom along the river banks
turning into flowers. The root of the lotus plant presents excellent
culinary properties, much appreciated in Japan and Chinese cookery, as
well as for therapeutic purposes; in the elimination of catarrh and
other secretions, promoting the des-obstruction of the breathing tubes.
